Joining fees at London gyms
25% of London gyms that publish a price charge a joining or admin fee on top of it — 163 of 659. The median fee is £20, the largest is £250, and joining every one of them would cost £5,325 before a single monthly payment. Checked 8 September 2026.
A joining fee is a one-off charge you pay to start a membership. It is almost never in the price a gym advertises, and it is the most common reason the first month costs more than you expected.

What the fee actually is
Operators use several names for the same thing — joining fee, admin fee, activation fee, enrolment. Whatever it is called, it is charged once, at the point you sign up, and it is separate from the monthly rate on the page. Every price on this site is quoted all-in: the advertised monthly rate plus any one-off fee spread across the first year, so two gyms can be compared on the same basis.
One thing the fee is not: an annual prepaid membership. Some operators price a whole year up front — £1,599 at Digme Moorgate, for instance — and that figure is the price of the year, not a charge on top of it. Counting those as fees would put this page's headline at 56% instead of 25%, and it is the kind of error that quietly survives for months, so the test used here is simply whether the all-in price exceeds the advertised one.

Half of the gyms that charge one ask £20 or less. The long tail is short but steep.

What to do about it
- Ask whether it is waived. Joining fees are the most frequently discounted part of a gym's pricing, usually at the start of the month or in January.
- Check the fee before the rate. On a £20 membership a £25 fee is a bigger difference than most of the price gaps between budget chains.
- Compare all-in, not advertised. Every listing on this site already does.
