No-contract vs tied-in gym memberships in London

London gyms you can leave at any time have a median all-in price of £40.66 a month across 199 gyms, against £45.77 across 374 gyms that tie you to a minimum term. But the gap is mostly which gyms sit in each group, not the contract itself: 52% of no-contract gyms charge a joining fee, against 11% of tied ones. Checked 8 September 2026.

Flexibility is priced, but not in the way the headline numbers suggest. What you are usually trading is not a higher monthly rate — it is a fee at the door.

Commitment terms read from each gym's own website, as of 8 September 2026 · How we collect data →

The two groups

Operators describe commitment in about thirty different phrasings, so each gym is sorted by what its own label says: anything naming a number of months is tied, anything explicitly rolling or cancel-anytime is no contract, and 86 gyms say only "see club terms" and are reported separately rather than being assigned to a side.

Why the headline gap is misleading

No-contract looks £5.11 a month cheaper. It mostly is not. The budget chains that make up most of the no-contract group would be the cheapest gyms in London whatever their terms, and once you compare within a price band the advantage narrows and then reverses:

Price band No contractMedian Minimum termMedian
Under £50 a month127£36.99197£34.08
£50 to £10016£8082£82.83
£100 and above56£22595£165

Above £100 a month the gyms asking for a commitment are the cheaper ones. That is the trade in its honest form: at the premium end a minimum term buys a discount, and at the budget end it buys nothing much at all.

Where flexibility is actually charged

The split that survives is the fee. 52% of no-contract gyms charge a joining or admin fee, against 11% of tied ones. It is a coherent way to price: a gym you can leave after one month recovers its sign-up cost at the door, while a gym holding you for twelve months has twelve months to recover it.

So the practical question is not "which is cheaper" but how long you will stay. On a short stay the fee dominates; on a long one the monthly rate does. The joining-fee page has the amounts.
